What is Mordançage (mor-dahn-sahzh)?

Mordançage is an advanced darkroom technique for silver gelatin prints that lifts and reshapes the photographic emulsion, producing delicate veils, cracks, and textures. The process often involves bleaching with copper and hydrogen peroxide, followed by hand manipulation of the emulsion using brushes or cotton swabs. These interventions allow the artist to control highlights, shadows, and surface detail, creating unique, one-of-a-kind prints. Mordançage blends photographic precision with painterly effects, producing images rich in depth, contrast, and unexpected detail.
